LMS ads

There are several reasons why LMS ads are typically modernist.

Firstly, modernist aesthetic considers bold designs, simplified forms and striking colours. And all these visual features had been used by modern artist creating advertising posters for LMS.

Secondly, in particular the development of modern industrial societies and the rapid growth of cities, followed then by the horror of World War I, were among the factors that shaped Modernism [Wikipedia].

Looking carefully at all these posters we can notice the presence of the industrial growth, power and glory of the nation faced the War, positive changes, national heritage and the hope for better future. These images used for LMS posters gave people hope and faith in the country they were born and lived in such difficult after war time.

Moreover, LMS being a London Midland & Scottish Railway Company by using industrial scenes in their posters reminded Brits that connecting cities and carrying fright for industry were central to their business.
